Allego — multi-country charging across Europe

Allego is a multi-country charging-network operator headquartered in the Netherlands, originally a subsidiary of grid-operator Alliander, now NYSE-listed. The footprint mixes AC kerbside, retail destination DC, and motorway HPC across the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France and several other European markets — making it one of the few CPOs that's a meaningful coverage option in multiple countries simultaneously.

On Plugsquare's data feeds, Allego usually emits its raw operator name as 'Allego' (some feeds emit minor variant spellings, including the playful 'Ällego' typo from at least one source — both map to the same Allego operator card).

Where Allego operates

The Netherlands is the original home market; Allego has dense AC kerbside coverage from the city-concession era, plus a meaningful share of the country's DC fast-charging at retail and motorway sites. Belgium is the second-largest market by site count, with similar mixed AC/DC coverage particularly in Flanders. Germany has been a fast-growth market post-IPO, with HPC sites at motorway intersections and urban hubs.

France's IRVE national network includes Allego sites mostly at motorway aire de service and supermarket destinations, with a smaller AC footprint than in the Benelux. Smaller markets — Sweden, Denmark, the UK — have growing Allego networks too. The brand's strategy is being a multi-country operator rather than dominating any single market.

Apps and pricing

Allego's own app gives you the direct tariff at Allego sites. The 'Allego SmoovCharge' subscription tier brings the per-kWh price down for frequent users, similar in structure to Fastned Gold or Ionity Passport. Roaming via third-party EMSPs (Shell Recharge, Plugsurfing, Chargemap, EnBW mobility+) works at Allego sites but at a higher per-kWh rate.

Pricing is broadly competitive with other premium north-west-European HPC networks; for Dutch and Belgian residents who do most of their charging on the Allego network, the direct app is usually the cheapest single option. For cross-network roaming, an EMSP card (Shell Recharge being the popular default in the Benelux) is more practical even if slightly more expensive per kWh.

Allego vs. Fastned, EnBW

In the Netherlands, the Allego vs. Fastned choice is mostly a coverage question — Fastned is denser on the motorways, Allego is denser at retail and urban sites. Many Dutch drivers use both apps depending on where they're charging.

In Germany, the EnBW mobility+ vs. Allego choice depends on usage pattern. EnBW's network and roaming list are usually broader for German residents; Allego's direct pricing at Allego sites is competitive but doesn't roam as broadly. Cross-border drivers (Germany ↔ Netherlands ↔ Belgium) often find Allego more practical as a primary because the same app works across the three countries at the direct price.

What's on the Plugsquare map

Plugsquare shows every Allego site reported in the open-data feeds of each country — IRVE in France, EVnetNL and Eliso in the Netherlands, road.io in Belgium, Mobilithek in Germany. Coverage is essentially complete for the country-feeds Allego publishes into. Per-site detail (number of dispensers, peak power per stall, AC vs. DC) is shown when the upstream feed provides it.

Frequently asked questions

Is Allego available in multiple countries with one app?

Yes — the Allego app gives you direct-tariff access to every Allego site across the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France and the other markets Allego operates in. This makes it a practical primary for cross-border drivers who'd otherwise need a separate app per country.

Allego SmoovCharge — worth subscribing?

It depends on usage. The subscription drops the per-kWh price meaningfully at Allego sites; the break-even point is similar to Fastned Gold or Ionity Passport (~150–250 kWh/month at Allego sites). For occasional users the direct pay-as-you-go is fine; for frequent Allego users the subscription pays back fast.

Why do I see 'Ällego' in some operator listings?

It's a typo in at least one upstream feed (the umlaut variant) that Plugsquare maps to the same Allego operator card for consistency. The underlying chargers are the same — it's purely a name-spelling artefact of the open-data publisher.
