TotalEnergies Charging — HPC at fuel stations across Europe
TotalEnergies Charging Services is the e-mobility arm of TotalEnergies, the French energy major. The strategy is to bring high-power charging to TotalEnergies's existing fuel-station network across France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain and other European markets — combining the brand's forecourt amenities (toilets, convenience store, food) with 150–400 kW DC dispensers.
On data feeds, TotalEnergies publishes under several legal entities depending on the country — TotalEnergies, TotalEnergies Marketing France, TotalEnergies Charging Services, TotalEnergies Charging Services España, SLU — which Plugsquare groups into a single TotalEnergies operator card.
Where TotalEnergies operates
France is the largest single market; TotalEnergies Charging has rolled out HPC at most major TotalEnergies fuel stations, on both the autoroute network and at urban forecourts. Belgium is the second-largest by site count, with HPC at TotalEnergies Belgium stations along the E40, E19 and E411. Spain's TotalEnergies Charging Services España network has grown fast since 2023, mostly along the AP-7 and AP-1 corridors.
Smaller but growing markets include the Netherlands (mostly Limburg and the southern provinces, where TotalEnergies has more forecourt presence) and Italy. The strategy is consistent country-by-country: bring HPC to the existing fuel-station footprint rather than build greenfield canopy sites.
Apps and pricing
TotalEnergies Charging Services runs a single app across markets, with country-specific tariffs. Direct app pricing at TotalEnergies sites is competitive with other premium HPC networks — comparable to Tesla pay-as-you-go and Ionity pay-as-you-go, often a few cents cheaper than Shell Recharge at the same per-kWh tier.
Roaming partners include most major European EMSPs (Plugsurfing, Chargemap, Shell Recharge, EnBW mobility+, the carmaker EMSPs). Roaming rates at TotalEnergies sites are typically slightly higher than the direct tariff — as with every CPO, the operator's own app saves you 5–10 ¢/kWh.
Fuel-station HPC — pros and cons
The pro: TotalEnergies HPC sites are integrated into existing fuel stations with full amenities — toilets, food, convenience store, well-lit 24/7 access. For a 20–30 minute charging stop, this is a meaningfully better experience than a pure-canopy HPC site without facilities.
The con: the dispensers are usually in the corner of the forecourt rather than the main pump area, and access can be awkward when the ICE pumps are busy. Site count per location is usually 2–4 dispensers vs. Fastned's 6–8 — meaning a queue is more likely at peak times. As the network grows, TotalEnergies is building larger sites; this is more of an issue at older forecourt conversions than new builds.
TotalEnergies vs. Shell Recharge, Ionity
TotalEnergies vs. Shell Recharge is a like-for-like comparison: both are fuel-station-attached HPC networks with similar pricing and forecourt amenities. The choice usually comes down to which fuel-station brand has more sites near where you actually drive — in France, TotalEnergies typically wins; in the Netherlands, Shell Recharge typically wins; in Belgium and Germany, it varies by region.
TotalEnergies vs. Ionity is more of a network-type question. Ionity is pure-canopy 350 kW HPC on motorways with no fuel-station integration; TotalEnergies is mixed-amenity HPC at fuel-station sites. Coverage differs significantly: Ionity is on motorway services, TotalEnergies is at fuel stations both on and off the motorways. Many drivers use both.
Frequently asked questions
Are TotalEnergies chargers fast?
Yes — most TotalEnergies HPC sites are 150–300 kW per dispenser, with some new builds at 400 kW. Older sites still have 50 kW dispensers in addition to the HPC stalls. The actual delivered power depends on what your car can accept (typically 150–250 kW for current production EVs) and the battery state during the session.
Is the TotalEnergies app cheaper than roaming?
Yes — direct charging via the TotalEnergies Charging Services app is meaningfully cheaper than using a roaming EMSP card (Plugsurfing, Chargemap, Shell Recharge) at the same TotalEnergies site, usually by 5–10 ¢/kWh. For drivers whose primary charging is on TotalEnergies sites, the direct app is the right choice.
Does TotalEnergies operate the same way in France and Spain?
Yes — the brand and pricing model are consistent across markets. The legal entities differ (TotalEnergies Marketing France, TotalEnergies Charging Services España SLU, etc.), but the same TotalEnergies Charging Services app works across countries. Plugsquare groups the different entity names into one TotalEnergies operator card.
